AirLife Receives Innovation Award from EMS World

GRAND RAPIDS, MI January 6, 2025 AirLife, a leading North American manufacturer and distributor of consumable medical devices for anesthesia and respiratory care, has received the 2024 Innovation Award from EMS World, who provides clinical, management and regulatory content to emergency personnel, physicians, nurses, and administrators. The recognition was announced on December 23, 2024. The award recognizes the enhancements made to the Broselow Tape, a length and weight-based reference tool specifically designed for pediatric emergency care.

The EMS World Innovation Award recognizes the emergency care industry’s most pioneering products of the year that were on display at EMS World Expo, held September 9–13, 2024 in Las Vegas. An independent panel of judges met with company representatives to evaluate each entry, learn about its application, and determine whether it was worthy of this honor. Entries must be new or have undergone significant design changes since August 2023.

Revisions in the 2025 version of the Broselow Tape were developed by Lou Romig MD, FAAP, FACEP, Scott DeBoer, RN, MSN, CPEN, EMT-P in consult with Christina Riccio, MD and the AirLife clinical team. Content revisions include updated clinical guidelines conforming to 2025 PALS standards, obsoleted drugs have been removed, optimized emergency data has been added, airway specifications are highlighted, and patient weights are now printed on both sides. Visually, the tape has been redesigned using vibrant color zones and charts and tables have been reorganized to assist with usability.

Since 1986, the Broselow Tape has helped first responders and emergency clinicians quickly and accurately care for pediatric patients, and today it is a gold standard tool in pediatric emergency medicine. The tape provides pre-calculated medication doses, helping to eliminate errors in dosing and administration to pediatric patients. Such errors can be a greater threat to children than adults due to smaller organ size and still developing bodies. The Broselow Tape was originally developed by James Broselow, MD and Robert Luten, MD, with Scientific and Technical Assistance of Arno Zaritsky, MD, Robert Wears, MD, Bryan Blackwelder, PharmD, Bonnie Lundblom, RN, BSN, CPEN, and Allen J. Hinkle, MD. The Broselow Tape is available in the US exclusively through Armstrong Medical, an AirLife distribution partner.

According to the EMS World judging panel, “The improvements made to the current version of the Broselow Tape were long overdue. The addition of age ranges and vital signs at the top of the color-coded part of the tape, viewable on both sides, brings it in-line with other comparable products on the market and improves its ability to assist clinicians.”
