Broselow Pediatric Emergency Reference Tape

AirLife is proud to now include the 2025 edition Broselow Tape in our family of emergency care products. The Broselow Tape is a length- and weight-based reference tool specifically designed for pediatric emergency care. Since 1986 it has become a gold standard in pediatric emergency medicine. We have partnered with leading emergency care physicians to update the tape and bring a 2025 edition, reflecting recent updates in resuscitation guidelines from the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR).

Experience streamlined functionality with the newly updated Broselow Tape, featuring vibrant color zones, reorganized tables, and added quick-reference vitals for faster decision-making.

We’ve updated the list of drugs to reflect the latest medical standards, keeping the most current and relevant options, and critical airway specifications highlighted for universal clarity. The revised Broselow Tape ensures upgraded usability and compliance with the latest clinical guidelines. Enhanced with length, weight, and age-based metrics for optimized care.

IMPROVED LAYOUT & DESIGN:

Scott DeBoer of Pedi-Ed-Trics Emergency Medical Solutions collaborated with emergency physicians and AirLife to evaluate and update the Broselow Tape. He reflects on the revision initiative:

“For many of us in emergency healthcare, when it comes to sick kids, we have not known life without the “Broselow Tape.” Since being introduced in 1986, every few years, revisions to the tape have been made, but never like this. Since the last revisions in 2019, the care of critically ill or injured children continues to evolve based on ongoing research and clinical experiences. As such, regular updates to the tape are invaluable to reflect current expert opinion regarding medications and emergency equipment. New meds… New equipment… New features… You asked, we listened, and with the help of expert medics, nurses, physicians, and respiratory therapists, you have never seen a Broselow Tape like this!”

Since 1986, the Broselow Tape has helped first responders and emergency clinicians quickly and accurately care for pediatric patients, and today it is an accepted tool in emergency medicine. The tape is designed for quick calculation of ideal body weight, as well as emergency equipment sizes and medication doses for pediatric patients.

In the early 1980’s emergency physicians James Broselow and Robert Luten struggled with solving accurate pharmaceutical dosing and administration related to the emergency treatment of children. Broselow invented a home-made prototype, a tape, in 1985 that provided these recommendations visually. His vision was to allow “the tape to do the calculations, so caregivers could focus on the child and their families and not doing math.” Together with Luten, they completed foundational studies upon which the tape was based and went on to further develop and update the tape over the years with additional input from colleagues and clinical experts.

The Broselow Tape provides pre-calculated medication doses, helping to eliminate errors in dosing and administration to pediatric patients. Such errors can be a greater threat to children than adults due to smaller organ size and still developing bodies. Additionally, pediatric emergency care is prone to error given the chaotic nature of the emergency setting.

The Broselow Tape was originally developed by James Broselow, MD and Robert Luten, MD, with Scientific and Technical Assistance of Arno Zaritsky, MD, Robert Wears, MD, Bryan Blackwelder, PharmD, Bonnie Lundblom, RN, BSN, CPEN, and Allen J. Hinkle, MD.

Revisions in the 2025 version of the Broselow Tape were developed by Lou Romig MD, FAAP, FACEP, Scott DeBoer, RN, MSN, CPEN, EMT-P in consult with Christina Riccio, MD and the AirLife clinical team.

The 2025 Edition of the Broselow Tap is available to US customers through Armstrong Medical, an exclusive distribution partner.
